Deadline approaching for applications to the 2014 series of Child Genius…

Child Genius

The deadline for the next series of Child Genius is fast approaching, so now is the time to send in your applications if you and your child would like to take part.

Wall to Wall produce Child Genius for Channel 4 which will air in 2014 (the last series was on our screens in the summer). It will feature competition rounds and documentary filming exploring the challenges of parenting a gifted child, approaches to education and what it means to be a high-achieving child in Britain today.

John Otterstedt - MERF

The Mensa Education & Research Foundation (MERF) have named John Otterstedt of Ridgewood, New Jersey, the recipient of the 2013 Distinguished Teacher Award. He is a third-grade teacher at Hawes Elementary in Ridgewood, N.J. Nominated by a fellow teacher, Michael C. Feeney. Otterstedt was described as “a dedicated and zealous educator who demanded — and got — the very best from his students.”

It is 100 years since Liverpool born Arthur Wynne first published the ‘Word-Cross’ in the New York World Newspaper (21 December 1913). This is considered to be the moment when the ‘Crossword’ was born.

Crosswords are very popular amongst Mensans and feature regularly in regional newsletters and Mensa Magazine. They are often a challenge even for the sharpest minds due to their cryptic nature.

Tune in to BBC Two tonight (Monday 23 December) to see British Mensa Board Member Chris Leek take part in a special University Challenge. Chris was invited to represent the alumni of Aberystwyth University in a Christmas edition of the show.  The Aberystwyth team, which also includes Dan Jarvis MP, Dr Timothy Brain and Elfyn Llwyd, will go head-to-head with prominent graduates of Keele University.

Mensa Member, Glenys Hopkins, is to appear on ITV’s new Saturday night game show – Amazing Greys. Glenys, from Warrington, has been a Mensa member for many years and was delighted to be asked to take part as one of the show’s “Amazing Greys”. She enjoys quizzing and has been a finalist in the society’s very own Brain of Mensa annual competition.

Alongside some of the country’s most talented pensioners and the show’s hosts Angela Rippon and Paddy McGuiness, Glenys is pictured second from the right on the front row.

Fifteen young bright sparks from the same school have proved themselves worthy of Mensa membership.

The Albany School, a business and enterprise academy in Hornchurch, Essex, entered 80 pupils into the Mensa supervised test - and no less than 15 proved to have an IQ in the top two per cent of the population.

Chess star Sharon earns Child Genius title

Child Genius winner Sharon Daniel with her trophy

 Chess champion Sharon Daniel has beaten off some of the cleverest youngsters in Britain to win this year’s Child Genius title.

Sharon, 11, from Bolton, won the trophy at the end of the second series of the Channel Four competition, backed by British Mensa.

The independent learner beat eight year old Tudor Mendel-Idowu in the tense head to head finale of the four part series.

Sharon is the current under-11 UK girl’s chess champion, and she chose the Battle of Stamford Bridge as her specialist subject in the final.
